Jake Healy, the Loras College men's basketball team (13-5, 5-4 A-R-C) scored 47 points in the second half to surge ahead for the 81-68 road win against Simpson College (4-14, 1-8 A-R-C) on Wednesday.
The Storm held the lead early through the first eight minutes of the first half until a layup by
Griffen Clark and a three-pointer by
Ali Sabet gave the Duhawks the go-ahead points, leading 12-9 at the 11:56 mark. Healy added the Loras' lead and answered back to a bucket by the Storm with a three-pointer to put Loras up 17-11 at the halfway point. Simpson chipped away and came within two but Healy helped give the Duhawks some distance, showcasing his talents at the free-throw line with a two points and McGowen knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead 22-16 with 5:33 left in the half. The hosts tied it up, 25-25 with two minutes to go but the Duhawks closed out the half with nine-points off three-pointers by Healy and Sabet to take a 24-29 lead at the break.
Cole Navigato came out of the locker room energized and opened the second half with a dunk to extend the lead and McGowen rattled off two three-pointers to follow and put Loras ahead 44-32 in the early minutes of the half. With just under nine minutes to play, McGowen did it again and hit two more three-pointers to put the Duhawks in the driver's seat, up 69-48. The closest Simpson would come for the remainder of the game was 11 points at the four-minute mark but the Duhawks' poise at the free-throw line with
Jackson Kolinski, Healy, and McGowen going 6-6 closed out the game with a win for Loras, completing the season sweep of the Storm.
McGowen's strong second-half performance paced the team with tallied 27 points, shooting 5-8 from three-point range and 10-14 from the field. Healy continued his perfect run at the line with 6-6 shooting, improving to 32-32 on the season and added 14 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and six assists. Sabet scored 11 points and Navigato added ten to both score in double figures. The Duhawks put on an impressive display at the free-throw line, shooting 92 percent, headlined by 11-12 in the second half and carried the momentum off 12 three-pointers to solidify the win.
The Duhawks have a week off from competition, returning home to the Lillis Athletic & Wellness Center on Wednesday, Feb. 2 against Coe College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 P.M. and spectators are reminded per campus health and safety guidelines, masks are required at all indoor athletic events.
