Nov. 11, 2022 – Loras College's women's basketball team got the 2022-23 season started on the right foot on Friday night as the Duhawks earned a victory in the night cap of day one of the Loras Tip-Off Classic at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Duhawks (1-0) ...came out ahead of the Marian University Sabres (0-2) in a 68-55 game on Friday to win the season opener for the second year in a row.
Loras jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as 10 in the first quarter before growing that lead to 16 before halftime. The Duhawks outscored the Sabres 12-2 in fast-break points thanks in part to seven such points in the first quarter alone.
The Sabres made a late push to keep things close and cut the lead from as high as 20 down to 12 early in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough against a balanced Duhawk offense.
Junior forward
Sami Martin finished with 11 points to lead a trio of Duhawks who reached double figures. Martin wasted no time in securing her first double-double of the season as she also reeled in a game-high 11 rebounds while leading the Duhawks with five steals.
Senior guard
Madison Fleckenstein joined Martin in doubles figures with 10 points, as did sophomore guard
Silvana Scarsella, who led all bench players with 10 points of her own on Friday night. Fleckenstein and senior guard
Cierra Bachmann paced the team with three assists each while Bachmann added seven rebounds and zero turnovers to her line over her 21 minutes on the floor.
The Duhawks also never trailed in the contest for a wire-to-wire win to open a highly anticipated 2022-23 season.
The Loras Tip-Off Classic continues with two more games tomorrow, starting with Simpson College and Marian University at 2 P.M. ahead of Loras and Augustana College at 4 P.M.
