Dec. 4, 2022 – Loras College's men's and women's swimming teams got tested over the weekend as the Duhawks were part of a stout field at the Wheaton College Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Both squads finished seventh out of eight teams over the course of the two-day meet, one of just two meet-style events on Loras' schedules this season with the other being the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Championship on Feb. 16-18.
This weekend's field featured a host of respectable programs, including the third-ranked women and seventh-ranked men's teams from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from Olivet Nazarene University. Each ONU team placed second in the meet behind the Wheaton women and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men.
Senior
Nina Schiro highlighted the Loras performances over the weekend by finishing top 10 in a pair of events. Schiro earned a spot in the podium with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event as she clocked a season-best 1:00.57 time.
Schiro also earned an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke event, with a 2:12.83 time in the finals.
Juniors
Annie Quinn and
Ellianna Stine each earned a top-20 finish over the weekend as well as Quinn placed 16
th in the 50-yard freestyle event after qualifying for the B-finals. Stine was second in the C-finals and 18
th overall in the 100-yard butterfly standings.
Four Duhawk men earned top-15 places in the final event results, highlighted by senior
Christopher Grunke, Jr. placing fourth in the 100-yard individual medley race out of 15 event entrants.
Freshman
Caden Gillmore earned a pair of top-15 finishes of his own as he came home 13
th overall in the 500-yard freestyle and 14
th overall in the 200-yard butterfly. Both of Gillmore's finals times in those events were season-bests, including his 5:00.34 in the 500-yard freestyle that is over 16 seconds better than his previous best.
Juniors
Brad LaGrange and
Brian Day earned top-15s as well as LaGrange's 22.45 in the 50-yard freestyle earned him a tie for 14
th while Day placed 15
th with a 2:21.51 in the 200-yard breaststroke event.
Both programs are off until the turn of calendar as the Duhawks' next action will be a dual versus A-R-C foe Luther College on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 P.M.
