PELLA, Iowa (Feb. 5, 2022) – Looking to bounce back from a mid-week setback, the Loras College men's basketball team (14-6, 6-5 A-R-C) rerouted the ship with an 81-66 win on the road at Central College (4-16, 1-11 A-R-C) on Saturday and look to carry the momentum into a busy three-game slate in the coming week.
The Duhawks took an early lead and pulled ahead 10-2 in the first four minutes. The Dutch stopped the run with a three-pointer and came within two points with 15:14 on the clock but back-to-back three-pointers by
Rowan McGowen and
Tyler Bass and a layup by
Jake Healy and another three-pointer put the Duhawks back in control, up 23-12 with 13:01 left in the half. Alex Single grabbed the offensive board for the tip-in layup to extend the lead but Central came back with a short run to come within two point with 5:26 left to play. Singleton and
Cole Navigato hit back-to-back layups and pull ahead by five but the Duhawks had work to do in the second half to regain a comfortable lead as the Dutch came back to cut it to a three-point deficit, 37-34, heading into the break.
Both teams continued to play close to open the second half until a layup by Singleton at the 13:37 mark sparked a run for the Duhawks with a three-pointer by
Griffen Clark and a jump shot by
Tyler Bass, helping Loras take back a ten-point lead. The Dutch tried to break Loras' momentum but would not come any closer than within eight points as the Duhawks closed out the final four minutes with a 9-2 edge for the road win.
Healy recorded his second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in addition to four assists and four steals while McGowen led all scorers with 21 points and was a perfect 4-4 at the line. Navigato edged closer to his 1,000th-career point with 15 on the night and grabbed six boards.
Myles Barry led the team with five assists. Clark added 11 points off the benchThe Duhawks came away with 11 steals and forced 21 turnovers on the Dutch while only committing four.
The Duhawks have a tight turn around for their first of two games against Nebraska Wesleyan University this week, starting with a road trek to Lincoln, Neb. on Monday, Feb. 7. Tip-off is set for 5 P.M.
