WHEATON, Ill. (Sept. 10, 2022) – Loras College's women's volleyball team dropped to 3-4 on the young season on Saturday afternoon as it fell in a pair of matches versus Wheaton College and Concordia University Chicago.
The Duhawks were swept in all three of their matches they played over the weekend at the Marylin Scribner Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. Loras' team features a lot of new faces, and this weekend presented a number of challenges that should help them improve ahead of conference play and a home tournament coming up next weekend.
Freshman opposite hitter
Alexis Woltman led the Duhawk offense for the second consecutive game as she tied sophomore middle blocker
Amelia Gutierrez for the team lead with seven kills apiece against the Thunder. Woltman also led the team with three services aces and added a pair of digs to her stat line.
The Thunder kept Loras in the teens in scoring in the first and third sets on Saturday morning, but the Duhawks battled for a much closer result in the middle set. The Duhawks kept pace with the Thunder throughout the set and never trailed by more than four, which wound up being the final margin.
One significant improvement for the game was cutting down on the errors. After totaling 32 errors in Friday night's game against Benedictine College, Loras only accounted for 10 against the Thunder in its first game on Saturday.
The Duhawks faced a similar fate in their third and final game of the weekend as they suffered a third straight sweep, this time at the hands of the Concordia University Chicago Cougars.
Loras tallied more kills than did its opponent in two of the three sets in the match, but only accumulated a hitting percentage of .057 for the match.
Senior pin
James Keefe led the offense in the match with nine kills while adding five digs. Junior setter
Sara Hoskins also contributed greatly to the cause as she filled the stat sheet with 25 assists (55 for the day), 12 digs, three service aces, and one block assist.
Loras has a quick turnaround as the Duhawks will start American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they travel across town to play at the University of Dubuque at 6 P.M.
