No. 28 Men's Cross Country Starts Season Strong at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa (Sept. 2, 2022) – Starting the 2022 season at the course they will see again for the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Championship later in the season, the No. 28 Loras College men's cross country team gave its younger runners and newcomers a chance to shine at the Bill Buxton Invitational, hosted by Simpson College, on Friday.

In his first collegiate race, Eric Rutherford was just shy of making his way onto the Duhawks' top-ten list for the 6-kilometer race, leading the way for Loras and took fourth with a time of 19:38.8. Will Whalen added a top-ten finish, placing sixth with a time of 19:46.7 and freshman Ryan McGrath finished seventh in 19:50.0. Justin Schultz (19:57.3) and Stephen Ringo (20:02.3) added top-ten finishes in ninth and tenth, respectively, to round out the Duhawks' scoring five while freshman Logan Hoger (20:04.4) took 12th and Jacob Hocking (20:11.3) finished 14th for Loras' top-seven.

The Duhawks put their race strategy into practice with a 23-second spread among the top-seven runners, the tightest spread among the five teams at the meet. Loras came in second with 36 points, just six points behind the Storm.

The Duhawks next race is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 at Aurora University, previewing the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship course the team will race in November. The men's race begins at 10:45 A.M. in Geneva, Ill.
