Sept. 28, 2022 – No. 24/16 Loras College women's soccer came close to earning a sixth-straight victory on Wednesday evening, but instead had to settle for a 2-2 tie with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Duhawks (6-0-3) remain unbeaten on the 2022 season but came away from their battle with the Warhawks (5-2-3) with their third tie of the year. Three ties are the most in a season for Loras since a 15-2-3 overall record in 2017.
It was business as usual for Loras in the first half as a few scoring chances materialized, but the bounces didn't go in the Duhawks' favor. They finally got the break they needed when a corner kick chance set up the first score of the game in the 27
th minute.
Senior midfielder
Payton McDonnell sent another perfect ball into the box, leaving senior forward
Ryleigh O'Brien with a header chance that found the net to give Loras a 1-0 lead. It was O'Brien's ninth goal of the season and McDonnell's 10
th assist as both marks lead the team.
That 1-0 lead stood until the 67
th minute as the Warhawks capitalized on a long throw in play that acted similarly to a corner kick. Allie Prigge was on the receiving end of the Jordyn Czarapata throw as the Warhawks knotted the score at 1-1.
Loras scored what it hoped would be the game-winner in the 77
th minute when a free kick gave freshman defender Addie Kerkoff a chance to send a long pass down the field. The pass landed amongst a scrum of players near the goal, and a deflection allowed senior forward Erin Reickens to get a shot off, beating the Warhawk keeper to the near post to give Loras a 2-1 advantage.
With time winding down, the Warhawks drew a foul and set themselves up with a similar free kick chance. Prigge again was the beneficiary of the long pass, this time from her sister Liz Prigge as UW-Whitewater managed to sneak out with a draw thanks to the late equalizer.
The Duhawks controlled tempo for much of the game, but only took advantage of two scoring chances as they fired 23 shots compared to nine for the Warhawks. Loras also earned 12 corner kick chances to UW-Whitewater's two.
Loras gets one day off before it's next match as the Duhawks travel to La Crosse, Wis. to face the V-Hawks of Viterbo University. Game time on Friday, Sept. 30 is set for 3 P.M.
