Jan. 23, 2023 – Wrestling senior
Shane Liegel and men's track and field junior
Holden Murphy have been named as American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Athletes of the Week in their respective sports after each put together impressive, and even record-breaking, performances over the weekend.
Liegel, the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the 184-lb weight class according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), led the Duhawks to a sweep of four matches at the A-R-C Duals on Saturday as the Duhawks took down Nebraska Wesleyan University 49-3, Simpson College 43-3, No. 19 Coe College 24-16, and No. 9 Luther College 29-17.
The Spring Green, Wis. native was the only Duhawk to compete in all four duals, finishing with another perfect 4-0 record that included a win over a ranked opponent. Liegel totaled two wins by fall and one by major decision before the dual finale against Luther, where he defeated fourth-ranked Donovan Corn 5-3 by decision to finish the day undefeated and move to 25-1 overall in 2022-23. This award marks Liegel's eighth A-R-C weekly award of his career and the fourth of this season.
Murphy and the men's track and field program ran away with a meet victory on Saturday at the University of Dubuque's Kenneth "Moco" Mercer Open, aided partly by the junior's second-place finish in the weight throw and his third-place finish in the shot put.
The Benton, Wis. native didn't go to the top of the scoreboard on Saturday, but he did shoot to the top of the program's all-time record book with his 17.69-meter mark in the weight throw, breaking Nick McWilliams' mark of 17.47-meters from 2008. That record-breaking performance earns Murphy his first A-R-C weekly award honor of the season and the second of his career.
