WAVERLY, Iowa - In a battle between Nos. 2 & 3 in the American Rivers Conference standings, the Loras College Duhawks fought its way to a 2-0 victory over the Wartburg College Knights on Tuesday night at Salzwedel Field.
The Duhawks (8-2-4 overall, 3-1 A-R-C) got out of the gate on the offensive early when
Dani Galiana Torres fired off a shot on goal at 1:38. The Knights (6-1-6, 2-1-2) responded with two shots of their own before Galiana Torres netted his first goal since the season opener at the 7:06 minute mark.
The Knights took another two shots over the next 14 minutes before a foul on Wartburg's Brennon Woody gave
Reed Miklavcic a penalty kick opportunity, one that the Frankfort, Ky. native wouldn't let go to waste as he extended Loras' lead to 2-0 with 24 minutes to play it the half.
Two of the following four Knight shots before the end of the half were saved by the Purple and Gold, preventing Wartburg from cutting into the lead before the break.
Over the second half, Wartburg fired off eight shots, three of which were saved by goalkeeper
Owen Johnson, who closed out the day with five saves. Between Johnson and Loras' defense, the Knights fell for the first time this year and for the first time at home since Oct. 29, 2022.Â
Game Notes
- The victory is the sixth shutout of the year for Loras.
- It was the first shutout loss of the season for Wartburg, who have come to five other scoreless draws.
- Michael Koutsopanagos tied his season-high in shots with four, followed by Miklavcic and Galiana Torres with two each.
- The Duhawks are now 8-1-1 in its previous 10 meetings with Wartburg.
