DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's soccer team earned a spot in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, following a 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.
The Duhawks struck first with a goal by
Kaighin Frost off a pass from
Libby Perry at the 10:02 mark, but Josie Majowka netted the equalizing goal for the Maroons with under 14 minutes remaining in the first half to head into the break knotted 1-1.
Despite 13 total shots between both squads, neither team was able to find the back of the net by the end of regulation. Five minutes into the first overtime, Loras (18-1-1) made the most of a free kick opportunity, where
Hannah Schmitz placed a ball into the box for
Reagan Lindsay who scored the game winning goal.
The Duhawks prevailed even though Chicago (9-3-8) recorded 23 total shots, which featured nine on goal, while Loras finished with 14 shots overall, seven of which were on target.
Kyndal Kells earned the win in the net for the Purple and Gold with eight saves.
Up Next: The Duhawks will take on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The date, location and time of the game has not been announced yet.
