ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Loras College women's basketball team defeated Fontbonne University 83-55 to earn its first road victory of the season on Wednesday night.
After a slow start for both teams, the Duhawk offense found a rhythm as
Emerson Whittenbaugh and
Silvana Scarsella scored back-to-back three pointers to give Loras a 12-6 lead in the first quarter. Loras (3-0) outscored the Griffins 24-11 in the second quarter to take a commanding 41-19 lead at the half.
Fontbonne (0-3) was unable to keep up with the Duhawks in the second half, with Loras leading by as many as 36 points with 4:24 remaining in the contest.
As a team, Loras shot 58.5 percent (31-of-53) from the field and was able to knock down 10 three pointers on the night. The Duhawks also forced 19 turnovers, which led to 23 points for the Purple and Gold. The Duhawks also controlled the glass and won the rebounding battle 26-20.
Fontbonne was led by Kya Harbour who had nine points, while Ja'mise Bailey finished with eight points and three assists on the night.
Sami Martin led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed a game-high five rebounds. Whittenbaugh followed closely behind with 13 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, while
Claire Wagner scored a season-high 11 points for the Duhawks.
