Women’s Tennis Dominates in Last 2 Matches of Spring Tennis Fest

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 16, 2023) – After a rough go on day one, the Loras College women's tennis team bounced back with a pair of dominating victories to finish their spring trip with a  2-1 record.

The Duhawks swept their way past Cairn University 9-0 on Tuesday before taking down Ramapo College 8-1 on Wednesday, giving them a winning record at the Spring Tennis Fest and improving their overall 2022-23 record to 12-6.

Loras 9, Cairn 0
All nine matches were decided in straight sets against the Highlanders as the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were just single setters. At No. 2 doubles, the regular duo of sophomores Caroline Hutchinson and Leia Papanicholas cruised to an 8-0 victory before they each took care of business in their respective singles matches.

At No. 3 singles, Papanicholas went 6-0, 6-4 over Cairn's Ersy Neal while Hutchinson went 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles over Rebekah Hepp. Senior Sara Backus cruised as well, winning No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2 over Rachel Campbell-Robertson.

Loras 8, Ramapo 1
Against Ramapo, Loras suffered only a singles defeat as it cruised past the Roadrunners to finish out the trip. Senior Lauren Diiulio at No. 1 singles engaged in a strong battle with Ramapo's Melanie Brentnall and responded from a 6-4 loss in set one to win 6-4 in set two and force a third set, where she ultimately fell 10-8 in a close match.

Papanicholas (6-1, 6-1) and Hutchinson (6-0, 6-0) each cruised to singles wins yet again while sophomore Dorothy Deans also made light work of her No. 5 singles battle in a 6-0, 6-2 win. Deans and her freshman doubles partner Ellie Kalina helped with the doubles sweep as they took their No. 3 doubles match by a score of 8-1.

The next time the Duhawks hit the courts, they'll be at home at the Tucker Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 25, against Truman State University. Start time for that match is set for 4 P.M.
