March 2, 2023 – Leading into Thursday night's match, the (RV) Loras College men's volleyball team had never beaten the Raiders from the Milwaukee School of Engineering, but the Duhawks put an end to that streak with a 3-0 sweep to run their current winning streak to nine games.
The Duhawks (12-1) had to earn their first ever victory over the Raiders (4-10), who have played one of the more challenging schedules in the country so far in 2023 as four of their 10 losses have come against ranked opponents.
Thursday night's clash looked like it was going to go back and forth for the entirety of the night as Loras and MSOE kept things tight and worked their way to a 16-16 tie in the first set.
A kill from senior hitter
Dorian Fiorenza tied the score at 16 and sparked the turning point of the entire match for the Duhawks. Before that play, neither team had led by more than two points, but Fiorenza's kills sparked a 7-1 run that gave the Duhawks a 22-17 advantage.
Loras controlled the set from there on out and finished it off at 25-19 on a kill from junior hitter
Tyler Kratochvil, who accounted for two of the final three Duhawk points in the first set.
Loras got ahead early in the second set and held a steady lead into the midway point. A kill from Kratochvil gave the Duhawks the serve and started a 5-0 run that put the Duhawks up 16-9, which again proved to be enough to allow them to control the set on their way to a 25-21 win. After three late points from the Raiders, a James Zippay service error ended the threat.
MSOE jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set and looked poised to make things interesting. Loras managed to even the score shortly thereafter, leading to another back-and-forth set that continued all the way to the end as Loras held a narrow 21-19 lead.
Despite the Raiders threatening to force a fourth set, Loras scored the final four points of the set to seal the deal on a 25-19 win and a 3-0 match sweep.
Fiorenza led all players with 13 kills while totaling only one attacking error for a hitting percentage of .600. Sophomore hitter
Corey Mayotte was close behind with 10 kills. Senior setter
Joe Horn led the way with 26 assists and led the team with 13 digs.
The Duhawks finish their busy stretch of three games in four days on Saturday, March 4, when they host College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) opponent and 10
th-ranked North Central College at 3 P.M. at Lillis Court.
