Story Links

DUBUQUE, Iowa – A layup by Madison Haslow in the final four seconds of play broke the 58-58 tie to give the No. 21 Loras College Duhawks a 60-58 victory over Coe College on Wednesday evening inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

The Purple and Gold raced out to an 11-2 lead, forcing the Kohawks to call a timeout after just three minutes of play. At the end of the first quarter, the Duhawks held a 15-8 lead over Coe (15-4 overall, 6-4 American Rivers Conference).

The Kohawks cut the Loras (15-2, 7-1) lead to five twice throughout the second quarter, but the Duhawks maintained an eight-point cushion heading into the break.

Coe went on a 9-3 run to start the second half, cutting the Loras lead to just two, but back-to-back Loras baskets from Lexi Beier and Claire Wagner extended the lead back to seven.

The final quarter saw the score tied four times with the Kohawks taking their largest lead of the game (54-50) with 5:07 remaining. Loras outscored the visitors 10-4 in the final five minutes of the contest to secure its 11th consecutive victory.

Coe's Kaalyn Petersen led all scorers with 18 points. She also added 14 boards, one block and three steals to her stat line. Taylor Brunson chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Ellie Wisner contributed nine points off the bench for the Kohawks in the loss. As a team, Coe shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from behind the arc.

Silvana Scarsella and Daniella Jarrell led the way for the Duhawk offense finishing with 10 points apiece. Sami Martin and Madison Fleckenstein followed closely behind with nine points each. Martin pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Haslow dished out five assists and blocked three shots in the win. Loras shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field and just 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from downtown.
