DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's soccer team fell 4-3 in penalty kicks to Emory University in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon inside the Rock Bowl.
Savannah Johnson put the Duhawks on the board first with her 18
th goal of the season off a pass from
Athena Sheets at the 24:48-minute mark. Loras (20-0-2) maintained its 1-0 lead into the half and over 20 minutes into the second period.
Emory's (13-3-4) Emily Woodall knotted the score up in the 65
th minute after flicking the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Kaitlyn Nimmer.
Neither squad was able to put itself ahead in the final 25 minutes of regulation nor in the two overtime periods, so for the second consecutive contest, the Purple and Gold headed to penalty kicks to decide a winner.
The Eagles successfully completed 4-of-5 penalty kick attempts to advance to the Elite Eight.
Kyndal Kells recorded a season-high 11 saves on the night, while
Lauren Riggle and
Kaighin Frost fired off four and three shot attempts respectively over the 110 minutes of play.
The Duhawks conclude their 2024 season with an undefeated home record (12-0-2), marking the fourth-straight season that Loras has posted an unblemished mark on its home pitch. 10 student-athletes made the American Rivers Conference All-Conference team, with Riggle and
Reagan Lindsay earning Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Player respectively.
