Women's Basketball Topples Spartans on Senior Day

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College Duhawks defeated the University of Dubuque Spartans for the second time this season 65-42 on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.  

Seniors Megan Murray, Sami Martin, and Cassidy Randl earned the start on their Senior Day alongside fifth-year returners Madison Haslow and Madison Fleckenstein. The three seniors and senior manager, Andie Perch, were honored before the game for their dedication to the program.  

The Spartans started off hot, outscoring the Duhawks 12-6 in the first six minutes of play. The Purple and Gold trailed by 10 (19-9) at the end of the first quarter. 

The second quarter was a battle. The Duhawks started to take control, going on a 12-4 run shrinking the Spartan lead to two. Martin scored 10 of her 16 points this period, while Fleckenstein converted crucial shots that helped tie things up at 32-32 with less than 15 seconds to go in the half. 

The second half was all Loras (22-3 overall, 14-2 American Rivers Conference). The Duhawks held the University of Dubuque (15-10, 9-7) to a combined 10 points, while putting up 33 points to cruise past their crosstown rival. 

Dubuque was led by Karsen Kershner who finished with 15 points and four rebounds. As a team, the Spartans shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the floor and a dismal 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from downtown. 

Martin led the way for Loras with 16 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Silvana Scarsella followed closely behind with 10 points and four rebounds, while  Haslow was all over the court this afternoon finishing with seven points, four rebounds, one assist, and two blocks. The Duhawks shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from behind the arc.  

Up Next: The Duhawks earned the No. 2 seed in the A-R-C Tournament and will host the winner of the No.3 Coe/No. 6 Luther game on Thursday, Feb. 22 on Lillis Court.
