CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team fell to Coe College, 100-95, in a heartbreaking, double overtime thriller on Wednesday night inside Kohawk Arena.
The Duhawks led for a majority of the first half, increasing their advantage to 10 multiple times. Loras (12-6, 6-3 A-R-C) remained in front, 42-39, at the midway point.
Coe (12-7, 6-4) tied the score up at 42-42 just 1:13 into the second half with a three-pointer from Cooper Nailor. The Kohawks took their largest lead of the night (64-58) with just over eight and a half minutes left to play in regulation, however, the Duhawks went on a 6-0 run to erase the deficit and knot things up at 64-64. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points. A layup by Coe's Brady Klahn with two seconds left on the clock tied the game up at 77-77, forcing overtime.
Both squads traded buckets in the first overtime, but it was
Gavin Sarvis who gave the Duhawks another chance to win by sending the game into a second overtime following a made layup with just two seconds left to tie the game up once again at 86-86.
Coe broke the final tie at 95-95 by going 5-of-5 from the foul line to come out on top after 50 minutes of play.
Sarvis led the way for the Duhawks with 25 points and six rebounds.
Jared Pearson followed closely behind with 20 points and six boards, while
Tyler Bass and
Alex Singleton added in 15 points apiece. As a team, Loras shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the floor and 71.1 percent (32-of-45) from the charity stripe.
Nailor paced the Kohawk offense with 25 points. He added six steals, four assists and eight rebounds to his stat line as well. John Steffen contributed 23 points off the bench, while Klahn and Bennett Sherry rounded out the double-digit scorers for Coe with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Kohawks shot 35.7 percent (25-of-70) from the field and 73.2 percent (41-of-56) from the free throw line.
