DUBUQUE, Iowa – Chris Schaefer, who was a star in track and cross country for the Duhawks, will be inducted into the Loras College Athletics Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2025. He and six other inductees will be recognized Friday, Oct. 3, in the Alumni Campus Center Ballroom.
"Above all, I am extremely grateful to the people I was lucky enough to encounter at Loras: friends, coaches, teammates, professors and classmates who, in retrospect, found just the right mix of accepting my quirks, while challenging me to grow beyond my previous limits, into the direction of what I believe the teachings of Loras are about: love," said Schaefer. "Do your best with all your heart and that really is good enough."
Schaefer, a Munich, Germany native, competed for the Duhawks from 1995–99 and established himself among the program's all-time greats. He earned five All-America honors, including back-to-back awards in cross country after finishing 26th at the 1997 NCAA Division III National Championships and 35th in 1998. On the track, Schaefer appeared on the podium three more times, placing fifth and sixth in the 1,500-meter run at the 1998 and 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships and taking third at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Following his Loras career, Schaefer continued his athletic and academic pursuits at the University of Arizona, where he earned his MBA in 2001 and placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run at the Pac-10 Championships.
Schaefer went on to build a successful career in finance, working as a financial and investment analyst in Kansas City and New York before moving to Frankfurt, Germany. Since 2010, he has served as a portfolio manager with Union Investment, overseeing $10 billion in equity assets.
Outside of his professional career, Schaefer has embraced personal growth and service. A certified yoga instructor since 2014, he opened a pay-what-you-can yoga studio in Offenbach, Germany, and in 2020 completed his first vision quest, now training to guide others through nature-based retreats and seminars.
Schaefer resides in Frankfurt, Germany, with his two sons, Nicolas and Mateo. Today, he is a devoted father, portfolio manager, yoga practitioner, teacher, and studio owner who remains deeply curious about life and what lies beneath the surface.
