RANTOUL, Ill. – From the first pitch to the last, the Duhawks controlled their competition in a 10-0 route that saw great hitting, dominant pitching, and a complete team effort.
Vincent Costantino was the star of the show for the Purple & Gold, as he navigated his way through six innings of four hit baseball. Costantino only struck out two batters, however, his relentless attack of the strike zone kept the Northland (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) hitters off balance all day long. Only twice did the Lumberjacks find themselves with a runner in scoring position while Costantino was on the mound, and Costantino aided his team in escaping those threats by snaring a pop fly and turning a 1-6-3 double play.
John Cornelius would relieve Costantino in the seventh inning, and he picked up right where Costantino left off, striking out one, and only allowing one base runner.
Loras' (3-3, 0-0 A-R-C) bats were on and off throughout the contest. Runs flooded across in the bottom of the first, as
Vince Polizzi and
Justin Gutierrez hit in three RBI. Similarly, the Duhawks were able to sneak across two runs in the second after
Trevor Segraves scored one on a fielder's choice, and
Cody Sunny scored one on a single.
A drought ensued for the Purple & Gold, where they managed one run on one hit over the next four innings thanks to a Segraves sacrifice fly that scored
Jake Zeal. But the bottom of the seventh would prove to be the dagger.
The Duhawk offense was reignited by doubles for
Jacob Willis and
Diego Huerta. All but one hitter reached base, and the game was sealed on an error by the Lumberjacks that scored Zeal.
The Bottom Line
Loras has now won their last three games and have reached the .500 mark on the young season. Big opportunities lie ahead for a hungry Duhawk squad that wants great vibes headed into a very difficult spring break schedule.
