DUBUQUE, Iowa – For seven innings, the Duhawks had a comfortable lead over their conference foes. But in the last three innings, the Knights scored nine unanswered runs and roared back to steal game three, 10-8.
Action began in the bottom of the third, as a trio of hits from
Max McCallum,
Jackson Cullen, and
Cody Sunny powered across three runs. This was followed by a two-run bottom half of the fourth, thanks to a homer from senior third baseman
Justin Gutierrez.
Vincent Costantino would be pulled after the fifth, but was lights out for the Purple and Gold, dealing out seven strikeouts and only allowing one hit.
Three more runs would be waved around, and notably,
Trevor Segraves would notch his first homerun as a Duhawk, upgrading the score to a seven-run lead as the top of the seventh approached.
All the momentum was with Loras (13-8, 3-3 A-R-C) but the cushion was evidently not enough, and the Duhawks did themselves no favors. Four runs were scored in the top of the seventh, and Wartburg (10-8, 4-3) would manage three runs in the ensuing frame. They had successfully tied it up as the top of the ninth came around, forcing the Purple and Gold to dig deep into the bullpen.
Unfortunately, crunch time favored the Knights, as they would be the beneficiaries of two Loras errors, and they'd score two more runs. With their backs against the wall, the Duhawks found no answers and were stunned by Wartburg, 10-8.
Runs, Runs, and More Runs
It was an offensive clinic for both teams over the three-game series, as a combined 72 runs would come around to score. Furthermore, Loras and Wartburg would combine for fourteen home runs, which averages out to almost five per game.
On Deck: The Duhawks' schedule gets no easier, as they face their crosstown rivals University of Dubuque on Tuesday, April 1. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Petrakis Park.
