DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's basketball team came up short against the Beavers of Buena Vista University, 73-70, on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
Loras raced out to a 6-0 lead in the early stages of the first period thanks to four quick points from
Claire Wagner. Buena Vista fought their way throughout the quarter and led at the end of the frame 20-16, thanks to a 9-0 over the final three minutes.
Macy Harnden provided a spark off the bench for the Duhawks in the second quarter with back-to-back threes to cut the BVU lead to two (26-24). Tyme Boettcher connected on a three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the half to give her team a 35-33 lead at the half.
In the third, the Beavers used their second 9-0 run of the game to take a 57-41 lead with two minutes remaining in the third. Buena Vista outscored the Duhawks by 10 in the frame, going 10-of-17 from the floor.
The Duhawks would not go away quietly and began to cut into the BVU lead throughout the fourth quarter.
Ashtyn Kelderman connected on a three with 5:40 remaining to cut the lead to single digits (63-54). After a layup from Wagner and two free throws from Kelderman, Loras found themselves down five with just under four minutes remaining. BVU regained a 10-point lead after a Bradi Krager three before Kelderman connected on another three and a layup to cut the lead to five with 30 seconds left. Loras got two more looks from three late in the game but were unable to connect as their comeback attempt came up short.
Despite the loss, Kelderman posted a career-high 30 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including five made three-pointers. Wagner followed with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds.
The Beavers were led by Adeeya Yanga who had 20 points on the night. Krager followed with 19 points while Boettcher had 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep.
Up Next: Loras will travel to Decorah, Iowa, to take on Luther College on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
