MADISON, Wis. – The No. 14-ranked Loras College men's volleyball team secured a 3-1 road victory Tuesday night against the Edgewood University Eagles.
Connor Jaral, Roman Rothermel, and Bo Brainerd III paced the Duhawk offense with 12, 12, and 11 kills respectively. Evan Dziadkowiec also dished out 36 assists in the win.
Edgewood (0-3, 0-0 NACC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the first set until a service error gave the Duhawks their first point of the match. Things continued to go the Eagles' way throughout the first set as they increased their lead to as many as 11 (20-9). A pair of Duhawk attack errors secured a first set victory for the Eagles, 25-14.
The Purple and Gold began to turn the momentum in their favor in the second set, but the Eagles were still able to keep a close lead throughout most of the set. Loras (2-0, 0-0 CCIW) had a chance to tie the score up at 13-13, but a kill and a block from Edgewood's Cade Schueller extended the Eagle lead to three (15-12). The Duhawks fought their way back, knotting the score up at 23-23 thanks to a block from Connor Jaral and Brainerd. A pair of service errors from each team brought the score to 24-24 before a Jaral kill and an ace from Brainerd secured the 26-24 second set win for the Duhawks.
Both teams traded points to start the third set, before the Eagles used a 6-1 run to take an 11-6 advantage. The Duhawks kept the score within five throughout the set, but a multitude of Eagle kills prevented the Purple and Gold from taking a lead. Loras climbed back, however, and were able to take a 17-16 lead after going on a 5-0 run. Loras extended the score to 21-19 and maintained a two-point lead until a Duhawk attack error tied the set at 23-23. The Eagles fought valiantly to keep the set alive, leading to three set points for the Duhawks before an out of bounds call was overturned, giving the Duhawks a 27-25 set three victory.
The Duhawks controlled the fourth set from the first serve, jumping out to a 6-2 lead, which featured a huge momentum block from Rothermel and James Pirocanac. A kill from Elijah Passey allowed Loras to extend their lead to five (9-4). The Duhawks continued to apply pressure to the Eagles, extending the score to 11-4 on the back of a pair of Eagle errors. The Purple and Gold ended the match on a kill from Passey followed by another from Brainerd, both assisted by Dziadkowiec, winning the fourth and final set 25-17.
