Duhawks Unable to Stifle Spartans at Home

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team fell to its rival, the University of Dubuque, 90-74 on Wednesday night inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

The game was back-and-forth throughout the beginning of the first half, with neither team able to pull away from one another. A deep ball from Dubuque's (12-6 overall, 5-4 A-R-C) Grady Thompson gave the Spartans their first double-digit lead of the game (18-7). The Duhawks were unable to score consistently shooting 40 percent (10-of-25) from the field and 30 percent (3-of-10) from beyond the arc. The Spartans went into the halftime break with an 18-point lead (51-33).

Johnny Semany got the scoring going for Loras (14-5, 8-2) to start the second half with a driving layup, but a pair of layups by the Spartans extended their lead to 20 (55-35) with 19:04 remaining. The Spartans continued to dominate in the second half, going on a 15-3 run en route to their 90-74 victory.

The Duhawks were led by Kyle Kober who finished with 19 points on 50 percent (5-of-10) shooting from the field.  Jack Haynes and Nolan Berendes rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Purple and Gold with 15 and 13 points respectively.  As a team, Loras shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc.

Up Next: The Purple and Gold travel to Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 31 to take on the Wartburg College Knights. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Levick Arena.
