Duhawks Collect Multiple Placewinners at Loras Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Loras College men's wrestling team competed at the Loras Open and came away with several top-six finishes, highlighted by strong championship runs and productive performances in the consolation brackets.

At 125 lbs, Lennon Ewert finished sixth. Ewert opened the tournament with a quick fall in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. After dropping into the consolation bracket, he continued to battle through tough matches on his way to a sixth-place finish. 

At 133 lbs, Wiley Jessup earned a fifth-place finish. Jessup rebounded from an early loss with an impressive consolation run, recording back-to-back falls to reach the consolation semifinals before securing fifth place by medical forfeit.

At 141 lbs, Andrew Weiss placed fourth. After a narrow decision loss in the quarterfinals, Weiss stormed back through the consolation bracket with three falls, advancing to the third-place match to earn his spot on the podium.

Loras had three placewinners at 165 lbs. Braylon Griffiths finished fourth after advancing to the semifinals with decisive wins early in the bracket and adding in a consolation victory. Aiden Cartwright placed sixth, highlighted by a tech fall in the championship rounds and a sudden-victory win on the backside. Allen Catour also placed after reaching the consolation championship match, putting together a long-run in the consolation brackets and closing his tournament with a decisive win in the consolation first-place bout.

At 174 lbs, Gunnar Thompson earned a sixth-place finish. Thompson advanced through the early rounds and recorded a fall in the consolation bracket to earn his placement. Jake Hiland also placed after reaching the consolation championship match. Hiland won multiple matches on the backside, including a fall, before coming up short in the consolation first-place match.

At 197 lbs, Kam Royster placed fourth. Royster opened the tournament with a first-period fall, followed by a sudden-victory win in the quarterfinals. He then added a major decision in the consolation semifinals to secure his place on the podium.

Up Next: The Duhawks return to dual action on Thursday, Feb. 5, when they travel down the road to face their rival, the University of Dubuque. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
