DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Loras College men's wrestling team turned in an impressive performance at the NCAA Division III Region VI Championships, qualifying seven wrestlers for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Leading the way for the Duhawks were regional champions
Eric Kinkaid (157 lbs) and
Dustin Bohren (174 lbs), who each dominated their brackets to claim individual titles.
Kinkaid went a perfect 4-0 on the day, opening his tournament with a technical fall before recording back-to-back falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the championship bout, he secured a hard-fought 10-8 decision to earn the regional crown and punch his ticket to nationals.
Bohren was as equally commanding, needing less than a minute to secure a fall in his first match, followed by another first-period pin in the quarterfinals. After a tech fall in the semifinals, he capped his tournament off with yet another fall to secure the title.
Chase Fiser (149 lbs),
Landry Barker (184 lbs), and
Jonah Clark (Heavyweight) each advanced to the championship matches in their respective weight classes, finishing as regional runner-ups.
Fiser put together an impressive run that included two technical falls and a semifinal decision before falling in sudden victory in a tightly contested final. Barker recorded back-to-back falls to reach the semifinals and added a decision victory to move into the finals. Clark used a major decision, a fall, and a semifinal decision to earn his spot in the title bout, ultimately finishing second after a narrow tiebreaker match.
At 125 lbs,
Aidan Gruenenfelder battled back after a semifinal setback to secure third place. He won his consolation semifinal in dramatic fashion and followed with an 18-5 major decision in the third-place match to clinch his spot at nationals.
Connor Fiser (133 lbs) also earned a third-place finish. After opening with a fall and a quarterfinal decision, he responded to a semifinal loss with two straight decision victories to lock up a return trip to the national tournament.
Nosa Egbon (141 lbs) narrowly missed a national berth, finishing fourth after recording a tech fall, a decision in the quarterfinals, and a fall in the consolation semifinals.
Braylon Griffiths (165 lbs) and
Kam Royster (197 lbs) each battled through the backside of their brackets to place eighth. Griffiths highlighted his tournament with a tech fall and a major decision, while Royster earned two falls in his tournament run.
As a team, the Duhawks finished second overall with 173.5 points, placing behind Wartburg College (210.5) and ahead of Coe College (167.5).
