DAVENPORT, Fla. – Loras turned the page on a recent rough patch and outclassed the Saints in a pair of contests, 11-2 and 7-6.
GAME ONE
The Purple and Gold wasted no time taking over the game, pushing across three runs in the top of the first. Oddly enough, their first hit of the contest wouldn't come until the second, when
Alex Sandoval pounded a ball up the middle, later scoring on a
Jackson Cullen single.
The rout continued with
Vince McDowell adding two more with a single in the third, and
Jack Carney sending a baseball deep into the Florida forestry, making it a nine-run advantage for Loras (5-3, 0-0 A-R-C) heading to the fifth.
Two more for the Purple and Gold, and the Duhawks had procured a double-digit lead.
Daniel Giusto was lights out on the mound, tossing five innings of two hit baseball, and exiting the game with the Duhawks in the driver's seat. If it weren't for a somewhat sloppy seventh, Marymount (5-4, 0-0 AEC) likely wouldn't have found the scoreboard.
But eventually Loras closed it out and captured game one, 11-2.
GAME TWO
Game two completely flipped the script.
Marymount pounced with five runs in the top of first inning, taking advantage of two Duhawk errors and a couple nice hits to dash all the momentum the Purple and Gold had built.
But the thing about a
Carl Tebon led team is they don't quit. And so began the long climb back.
In the bottom of the first, Loras managed two runs thanks to another Carney hit and four walks. Marymount found a way to cross another runner in the top of the second, but that would be all for the Saints.
Runs started piling in, with
Vince Polizzi,
Ben Shea,and
Colin Kissane leading the way. Polizzi had the standout moment in the comeback effort, with a solo shot to left field, weirdly his first of the season, that took the air out of Marymount and allowed for the Duhawks to rally.
The relieving duo of
Carson Hammer and
Dylan Ackermann guided Loras into extras where, eventually, Kissane cranked a ball on the ground, just out of the reach of the diving second basemen and scoring Carney.
The Purple and Gold had themselves a walk-off winner in extras, 7-6.
On Deck: Loras continues in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a game against Lakeland University. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m. eastern time, at Lake Myrtle Field Five.
