DUBUQUE, Iowa- Loras snagged victory out of the jaws of defeat as they stunned Nebraska Wesleyan in the rubber match of the three-game series, 12-11.
Jake Zeal had his fingerprints all over the win today, beginning in the first when he reached on a bunt single, advanced on an error, and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, all while no other batter even had a chance to hit for the Purple and Gold.
The lead would shift hands in the third, when Nebraska Wesleyan University (8-20, 3-9 A-R-C) smacked a round-tripper to left, making it a 2-to-1 ballgame.
In the same frame, Zeal once again left his mark, with a double to score
Alex Sandoval and knot the game up at two each.
Then in the fourth,
Liam Sullivan would knock a two RBI triple to right-center field, and score on an error on a
Vince McDowell groundball to the second baseman, giving Loras (12-12, 6-6 A-R-C) a three-run advantage as the fifth approached.
This is where things go a bit hairy for the home squad.
Six Prairie Wolf runs came around in the top of the fifth, from five total hits, all of which were singles. It was death by a million paper cuts, and in the blink of an eye, Nebraska Wesleyan captured a three-run lead of their own, 8-5.
Vince Polizzi found an answer in the bottom of the fifth with a single that scored a run, and a fruitful seventh inning allowed the Purple and Gold to regain a lead, thanks mainly to a two RBI double from the redshirt freshman
Ben Shea.
A little insurance came in the eighth from Polizzi with his third homer of the series, and the Duhawks were three outs away from capturing another series win over Nebraska Wesleyan.
Yet, it wouldn't be so simple.
A sudden three-run spurt from the Prairie Wolves left the home crowd in shock, and the bottom of the ninth was live at Petrakis Park, with just three-outs remaining for Loras to avoid disaster.
With the score at 11-10, Sandoval knocked in the tying run on a flare out to center field, and who else but Zeal would deliver the final blow, with a single to right field that scored
Joey Gumuls and sent the home fans into a frenzy.
On Deck: Loras heads across town to the University of Dubuque to take on the Spartans in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Dan W. Runkle Field.
