DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Loras College softball team had a successful doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon, starting with a decisive 7-0 victory in the game one, followed by a narrow 2-1 win in the latter half.
Game One: Loras 7, Nebraska Wesleyan University 0
In the first game, Loras tied a season high with a 14-hit effort, powered by a complete-game shutout from
Kaili Henning. She dominated on the mound, fanning a season-high nine batters while allowing only two hits, and no runs.
Loras (19-7 Overall, 1-2 American Rivers Conference) took an early lead in the first inning when
Ava Franklin singled and later scored on a double from Henning, making it 1-0. The Duhawks extended their lead in the third inning with a two-run homer from
Kiya Steger, after
Dana Skorich reached on a single and was later replaced by pinch runner
Keely Pilcher.
Loras maintained their momentum in the fourth inning, with
Ellie Baker reaching on a base hit before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Henning.
Katherine Svigelj, who was hit by a pitch, also scored on a single by Steger, increasing the lead to 5-0.
The fifth inning saw the Purple and Gold capitalize on defensive errors, as
Laurissa Klapatauskas reached third on an error and scored on a single by
Gillian Jones, who later scored on another error, solidifying the score at 7-0.
Game Two: Loras 2, Nebraska Wesleyan University 1.
In the second game, Nebraska Wesleyan (10-15, 2-3) broke the 0-0 tie in the fifth inning when Macy Santoni scored on a single by Paige Comstock, putting them ahead 1-0.
However, Loras (19-7, 2-2) responded in the sixth inning when Steger doubled to left field and scored on a RBI single by Klapatauskas, tying the game at 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the seventh inning as the Duhawks capitalized on defensive errors from the Prairie Wolves. Franklin walked, followed by Henning who also drew a walk before Skorich reached on an error, loading the bases.
Ashli Bossom then reached on another error, allowing Henning to score to walk-off the Prairie Wolves.
Steger pitched a complete game for the Duhawks in game two, allowing only one earned run over seven innings, conceding five hits and issuing one walk, while striking out six batters for her seventh win of the season.
