Football Game Notes: Key City Clash Set for Saturday

EFFICIENT PASSING GAME ...
Freshman quarterback Bob Kelly had his best game so far this season in the Duhawks 27-24 win at Simpson. Kelly completed 30 of 49 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown to senior wide receiver Nate Even. In the win, 11 Duhawks caught passes from Kelly, spreading the around and making it harder for the Storm to defend. Most importantly, Kelly didn't turn the ball over and converted 10 third down attempts, to Simpson's three. Limiting turnovers this weekend against the University of Dubuque will be crucial, as the Spartans are tied for 109th nationally in turnovers gained.

TURNOVERS WIN AGAIN ...
In 2013, the Storm handed the Duhawks a 27-10 loss in the Rock Bowl. In the Duhawks two wins on the 2014 season they have forced a total of 11 turnovers, with seven coming against Elmhurst College and four coming last weekend at Simpson College. All four against the Storm came by way of interception, as seniors Mike Canevello, Dave Pirkle, and Robert Anderson, along with freshman Maurice Young all tabbed one pick last weekend. Young returned his 53 yards for a touchdown and helped seal the win. Loras is currently tied for 10th in NCAA Division III in turnovers with 21. Maurice Young is currently tied for eighth in NCAA Division III with five interceptions on the year.

MOVING UP IN THE STANDINGS ...
Last weekend marked the Duhawks' first conference win in over two years. The last Iowa Conference victory for Loras was a homecoming game September 29, 2012 with a 28-25 win over Luther College. In addition, the last time Loras was victorious in a conference road game was on October 10, 2009 in a game right down the road against the University of Dubuque. The last time the Duhawks notched more than one conference victory in a season was in 2010 when Loras finished 4-4 in conference play and 5-5 overall.

BEHIND ENEMY LINES ...
The University of Dubuque comes in with a 2-5 record and a 1-3 record in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans pair of wins both came at home against Pacific University (16-10), and Simpson College (44-10). Offensively, the Spartans are senior quarterback Zach Fry, who has 140 passes on 235 attempts with 14 touchdowns, however he has thrown nine interceptions on the season. His favorite target is one of the nation's best receivers in senior Tyler Rutenbeck, who has accumulated 47 receptions for 673 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Spartan ground game is led by freshman Alec Arvanitakis, who has rushed for 639 yards on the 2014 season.

Defensively, UD is led by junior linebacker Trevor Stauner, who has totaled 83 tackles on the season, with 38 being solo stops. He's followed closely by fellow linebacker, junior Blaine Snitker, who has added 69 tackles and two interceptions, to go along with a solo sack. Junior defensive backs Oscar White and Durrell Mitchell have also added two interceptions for the 2014 Spartan defense.
