Schueller and Grcic Clutch for Loras in OT Win Over Edgewood

MADISON, Wis (Duhawks.com) – It took an extra five minutes of game time, but the Duhawks left Madison with a victory Saturday night 89-82 over Edgewood College in overtime. The season opener featured 10 lead changes and eight ties, with the largest lead of the game being held by Loras at eight points midway through the second half.

The Duhawks looked to utilize their post players in the first half, scoring 20 of the team's 35 points in the paint. Junior Mirko Grcic recorded nearly a double-double in the first half alone, tallying 13 points and nine rebounds. The Duhawk guards also made clear attempts to get to the rim. Loras only shot six 3-pointers in the half, capitalizing on two of them. Instead, Loras was efficient inside, drawing nine personal fouls and took 13 free-throw attempts. The Duhawks converted 9-of-13 from the line, which was over half as many as Edgewood could convert. Going into the half, the Duhawks lead 35-31.

Edgewood came out of halftime on the attack, going on a 10-2 run in the first two and a half minutes in the second half, led by Dylan Rusch's six points in that time span. The teams went on trading baskets until just under the 10 minute mark, when the Duhawks picked up the tempo. A series of defensive stops lead to run outs and a 9-2 run in favor of Loras. The run concluded with a Justin Vanwambeke and-1 conversion on a layup, putting the lead at 65-57 in favor of the Duhawks.

A near three-minute drought followed the run for the Duhawks. The team committed three turnovers and were 0-7 from the field during that span. Facing a 75-68 deficit with just 2:23 remaining in the game, head coach Greg Gorton called for a timeout.

Out of the timeout, senior Aaron Schueller drained a three-pointer to cut into the lead and breathe life back into the Duhawks. The momentum shift was astronomical as the team put together two stops and converted on a layup at the other end.

Trailing 75-73, Grcic forced a turnover, coming away with the steal. The Duhawks failed to convert on the ensuing possession and were forced to foul, putting Edgewood's Emilio Lopez on the line. Lopez sunk the first foul shot but missed on the second giving the Duhawks the ball with under 20 seconds remaining.

Schueller would only need 11 seconds to go down the court and sink the game-tying three on the very next possession. Loras put together one last stop on the defensive end and forced the game into overtime.

Edgewood struck first in the overtime period, taking the 78-79 lead. Junior Justin Schneider grabbed an offensive rebound the next Loras possession and score the layup with the foul. He converted the free throw for the three-point play and give the Duhawks a one-point lead. Edgewood responded with a last second jumper, beating out the shot clock, to regain the lead. Schueller responded with his sixth three-pointer of the game, putting the Duhawks ahead for good.

The team finished out the game going 7-8 from the free throw line to seal the victory.
