Women's Soccer Swamped by Lady Reds

KENOSHA, Wis. (Duhawks.com) – The seesaw start to the season continued for the Duhawks on Wednesday night as they fell on the road to Carthage, 3-1. Scoring for Loras in the loss was junior Katie Truesdale in the 22'.

A cool and damp evening set the scene for the Duhawks on Wednesday for their non-conference matchup with Carthage College. In the early goings of the 2014 season, Loras has failed to win more than one game in a row. After Sunday's 2-1 victory over Augustana, the women hoped to turn the tides, but it simply was not in the cards.

From the opening whistle, Loras came out in a very aggressive 2-5-3 formation, hoping to use the wind to their advantage and net an early goal. The tactic backfired in the 13' when Carthage mounted a counter-attack and forced senior goalkeeper Hannah Wilson to the ground to make a save. Wilson was unable to secure the ball against the turf, leaving Danielle Noverini with a golden opportunity to net the first goal of the night.

Despite the aggressive offensive formation, Loras struggled to create opportunities through the midfield, often times losing possession before the attacking third.

In the 22', Truesdale took matters into her own hands, and dribbled her way into the attacking third. With the keeper on her line, Truesdale stepped over the ball and ripped a shot that one-hopped near the six and hit side netting, catching Abby Alm off guard.

The goal erased the early Carthage lead, but the level pegging would be short-lived for the Duhawks.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, Jessica Socha went on a 60-yard run into the Loras attacking third from her midfield position. Finding herself free with space to operate, Socha ripped her shot on frame, tucking it underneath the crossbar for the go-ahead goal.

After falling behind for the second time in the opening half, the Duhawks were never able to recover, despite maintaining pace with the Lady Reds in the statistical categories.

The second half consisted mainly of Loras pressing in search of an equalizer. With time becoming a factor, a throw-in deep in the Loras zone fell to the feet of Alexis Fahlbeck who, with a quick turn, tucked the insurance goal into the back of the net, beating Wilson near-post.

With the loss, Loras falls to 3-3-0 on the year ahead of a weekend trip to Minnesota this weekend. The Duhawks will see St. Olaf College on Saturday and College of Saint Benedict on Sunday.
