Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Murphy Lifts Duhawks to Thrilling Victory Over Dutch

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Duhawk women's soccer team may have waited until the very last second, but senior Claire Murphy found a way to put the ball into the back of the net for the game winner as Loras took down Central College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Rock Bowl. Loras found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into the final ten minutes, but a goal off a penalty kick by junior Katie Truesdale in the 81' set up the miracle finish and help the Duhawks start Iowa Conference play with a win.

After a very quiet first half for both teams, the Dutch controlled possession and seemed to have the upper hand for the majority of the second half. The Dutch got on the board in the 50' when Emily Benson put the ball right over the head of Loras senior keeper Hannah Wilson. The Dutch would continue to pressure the ball forward, recording five second half shots.

After 80 minutes of play, the Duhawks awoke from their slumber and threw everything they had at goal, resulting in an abundant of scoring chances. In the 81', senior Alexa Eggert was dribbling away from goal when she was fouled in the box and the center official awarded Loras with a penalty kick.  With ice in her veins, Truesdale stepped to the penalty spot and blasted the equalizer into the back of the net. However, the Duhawks continued to attack and give themselves a chance to win the game in regulation.

With 11 seconds to play, Loras earned a corner kick, which was taken by freshman Alexis O'Neill. All that O'Neill wanted to do was get the ball into the box and give the Duhawks a chance. With a low service, Truesdale was the first to get a touch, but it eventually fell to the feet of Murphy, who sent home the winner as time expired, giving Loras the 2-1 victory.

Game Changer
As the game seemed to be getting away from the Duhawks, Central's foul on Eggert, resulting in the penalty kick, gave Loras the breath of life they needed to get back in the game.

Key Stat
Loras had plenty of chances to score on the afternoon, as they has six corner kicks throughout the game. However, they capitalized on their very last one to win the contest.

Notables
The Duhawks start 1-0 in Iowa Conference play, and continue to dominate the conference, as they have not lost to an Iowa Conference opponent since October 21, 2009.

Quotable
"On plays like that you don't even think. All I saw was Alexis O'Neill serving the ball in and Katie Truesdale got a foot on it before the goalie fumbled it and I was there to put it in. A terrific team effort from everyone involved in that play."

Next Up
Loras will take on inner-city rival, the University of Dubuque on Wednesday, October 1st on the Rock Bowl.  Last season, the Duhawks beat the Spartans twice, by scores of 2-0 and 3-2 in overtime.  Game time is at 5 P.M.
