No. 2 Duhawks Overpower Carroll with 5-2 Victory

WAUKESHA, Wisconsin (Duhawks.com) – After their successful 3-nil win in their home opener against Willamette University on Sunday, the No. 2 Duhawks travelled to Waukesha to take on the Carroll University Pioneers. Five different Duhawks contributed goals to their 5-2 defeat over the Pioneers. Goals came from Alex Bradley (3'), Sam Koenig (40'), Mike Pizzello (50'), Josh Kutzke (64'), and Jorge Simon (83').

Loras was caught off-guard by Carroll from the kick off when they had a scoring opportunity in the first minute but quickly compensated by applying offensive pressure to the Pioneers. Junior Richard Lenke started the momentum with a corner in the 2' that was recycled out to sophomore Matt Brant. Brant arched the ball over the Pioneer defense as Alex Bradley slipped past his defender and was left alone with the Pioneer keeper, Jacob Tincher, in the penalty box. Bradley, who was named Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week Tuesday, carefully placed his shot over a diving Tincher to put the Duhawks on the board.

Both teams battled in the first half keeping the pressure high. Although Loras had control of the game, the Pioneers put up a fight giving the game a constant back and forth momentum. Carroll's effort paid off when their equalizer came in the 29'. Tyler Coenen made it through a hole in the defense and managed to slip the ball past senior Sean Elvert to the back post.

Loras fired right back 12 minutes later when junior Jorge Simon played the ball down the line into the corner for junior Sam Koenig. Koenig beat his man by cutting the ball in towards the box and drilled the ball across the net past the reach of an outstretched Tincher into side netting to put the Duhawks back on top 2-1.

Koenig's goal would prove to be the catalyst in both team's offenses in the minutes following. In the 60', following a Loras corner kick, junior Tyler Cruikshank delivered a clearing attempt from Carroll back on frame and found the head of senior Mike Pizzello who directed it up and over the reach of Tincher for his third goal on the season.

Thinking the game was in hand, the Duhawks lifted their foot off the gas pedal just enough to allow Carroll to charge back in. A long throw by the Pioneers in the 61' had a mind of its own, avoiding the touch of Pizzello who attempted to clear it from danger. Instead, Andrew Jend found it at his feet and slotted it home past Elvert to cut the Loras lead back to one.

Out for revenge, Dillon Olson launched a ball from the half down the line to find Spencer Moore who flicked the ball back to Josh Kutzke 20 yards from goal. Kutzke settled the ball and took a shot that bent over a flying Tincher into the upper 90.

Loras' final insurance goal was the product of a free kick in the 83'. Simon and Moore set up over the ball in front of a four-man wall just outside of the box. Just like he has practiced so many times before, Simon curved the ball around the wall and slipped it into the near post.

"Today was a good win for us," Koenig said." "Every time you get a victory it's a good thing, but there are a lot of things we can work on after today. We scored five goals, which is satisfying but at the end of the day, letting up two goals isn't acceptable."

"It just shows that we just have to get back to work and develop that mentality that we can take teams out of the game early and we can't let them stay in like we did today."

The Duhawks take on Carleton College on Friday under the lights in the Rock Bowl. Carleton is the coach's pick to win the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and has won seven consecutive conference titles as well as being a regular NCAA Tournament contender.

"It's our first game at home under the lights and it's going to be a huge game," Koenig said. "We have to come out and win every time we step on the Rock Bowl."

Kick of is set for 7:30 p.m. with live coverage on the Duhawk Broadcast Network.
