DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team conceded three unanswered goals on Wednesday night as Coe handed Loras a 3-1 setback. Senior
Katie Truesdale scored the lone tally for the Duhawks for her 13th goal of the year.
Following last Saturday's loss to Wartburg, Loras took the practices since to focus on simplifying their game. Less than five minutes into the opening 45, the Duhawks dealt the opening blow on great combination play. Down near the end line, freshman
Elizabeth Mills played a seemingly simple ball across the front of goal where it found Truesdale for a bangoo to put Loras ahead by one.
The minutes following the goal, the Duhawks continued to apply forward pressure, but Coe's defense stood tall. The Kohawks' 4-5-1 formation was effective in clogging the midfield, which forced Loras to resort to long balls over the backline. Whenever the Duhawks attempted to build, defensive pressure from Coe forced a turnover.
Near the end of the first half, Coe's Sarah Fathallah sent a low-cross into the penalty area from the far side of the pitch. Reading it off the foot, junior
Maria Siebels came off her line to intercept, but couldn't quite hold on, resulting in a loose ball for Jessy Holen to send into the twine.
The goal by Holen completely changed the complexion of the match, resulting in the teams being level after 45 minutes.
The second half brought with it a slight change in formation for Coe, moving to a 4-4-2 in an attempt to generate more offense. As a result, both teams turned the game into a track meet, exchanging deep runs into opposing penalty areas. Neither side could find the touch to take the lead, leaving the sides level entering the final 10 minutes.
An adjustment to Loras' lineup in the second half moved sophomore
Sydney Wright up to an outside-mid role from where she started at left back. The adjustment allowed Loras to transition more effectively to their attacking players.
After earning a corner in the 83rd minute, Coe capitalized on a header from Fathallah after Loras' first clearing attempt did not make it out of the penalty area. The Kohawks added an insurance goal minutes later after Ashlyn Moos got in behind the last defender and slotted home the winner to the far post.
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Sydney Wright | Even without registering a point on the score sheet, Wright was a staple in Loras' attack down the stretch. Her ability to roam up and down the sideline provided Loras with opportunities to score on repeated occasions.
