Women's Soccer Upsets No. 21 Luther

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team continued conference play on Saturday, Oct. 17 with a match against No. 21 Luther. The Duhawks secured a 1-nil victory on the team's senior night thanks to a goal from freshman Elizabeth Mills.

Entering Saturday's match, Loras (7-5-2, 2-2-1) was winless in their last four matches, dating back to a 3-nil win over Simpson. Nearing the end of the regular season, the Duhawks knew Saturday's match provided an opportunity to right the ship.

Luther (12-2-0, 4-1-0) opened the match with repeated chances from the wings, sending crosses into the box. Loras' backline stood tall on repeated attacks, repelling the Norses chances to score.

The Duhawks settled into a groove and began to find seams that they could exploit. It seemed as though it would be a scoreless first half until Mills floated one in over the head of Luther's goalkeeper, Lauren Thormodsgard, in the 41st minute of the match. The goal marked Mills' second of the season. Earning an assist on the goal was junior Courtney Walsh.

Trailing by a goal in the second half, Luther began to feel the pressure and pushed numbers forward. With her backline working hard in front of her, freshman Michelle Loyo was up to the task, stopping all 10 shots that she saw, earning her first clean sheet in the process.
