PELLA, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – Saturday returned the Loras women's soccer team to Iowa Conference play and a showdown with Central College. After both teams found the net during regulation, neither side could net the winner, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Loras (6-3-2, 1-0-1 IIAC) opened play with six shots in the first 20 minutes. Senior
Danielle Vujovic registered the first shot on target in the 12th minute but was met with a save by Central's Sydney Lunardi.
The unbalanced play continued for most of the first half, with Loras pelting Lunardi with shot after shot. The Dutch keeper was up to the task, turning away seven shots in total from Loras in the opening 45.
In the 40th minute, Central (6-3-1, 1-0-1 IIAC) took the lead thanks to Kayla Sunvold, who broke the scoreless draw with her fifth goal of the season. Sunvold created space for herself outside of the penalty area and drilled her shot from 25 yards out, beating freshman
Michelle Loyo under the crossbar. In her first collegiate start, Loyo bounced back to finish the day with four saves.
Despite putting seven of the 11 shots on frame in the first half, Loras was denied the equalizer on multiple occasions largely in part to the success Central's Sydney Lunardi had in goal.
Her luck ran out in the second half after sophomore
Sydney Wright capitalized on a loose ball in the box. The sequence began with a hard shot on goal from senior
Katie Truesdale which was saved by Lunardi. The Central keeper could not hold on to the shot, surrendering a rebound which Wright delivered into the back of the net.
Extra time saw Loras take five shots, but could only manage one on target, resulting in Loras' second draw of the season.
