Duhawks' Win Streak Halted by Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras football team remained in the city limits of Dubuque on Saturday and faced off against their crosstown rivals, University of Dubuque. On a day where the clouds were a plenty and the rain was consistently present, the Duhawks struggled to put their offense in motion, suffering a 42-7 defeat.

At the end of the first quarter neither team had put any points on the scoreboard and both teams had missed a field goal. The Spartans flipped the switch in the second quarter, though, and rattled off 21 straight points to take a commanding lead. Dubuque's Rio Johnson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior Christopher Bagley for the first score of the day.

On Loras' next possession, freshman Nolan Baumhover was picked off at his own 32-yard line. The Spartans took nearly five minutes to string together 11 plays for 52 yards and anouther touchdown, this time by Dai Von Vance-Jenkins.

Another stalled possession by the Duhawks gave the Spartans the ball with 40 seconds left in the second half, which they used to their advantage. A 22-yard completion from Johnson to Bagley made it 1st-and-Goal from the Loras 1-yard line with one second left in the half. Following a Dubuque timeout, the Spartans gave the ball to Maurece Herrion who carried it across the goal line to make it 21-0 Dubuque.

Out of the halftime break, the Duhawks went right to work as Baumhover orchestrated a 14-play drive that spanned 78 yards and 4:21 of possession. On 4th-and-1, Baumhover found Even for a 23-yard strike to earn Loras a 1st-and-Goal. On the very next play, sophomore David Adams found space in the end zone and caught Baumhover's pass to put Loras on the board.

Dubuque regained the 21-point lead on their next drive, marching 76 yards in 13 plays, finishing with a touchdown pass to Bagley. Later in the fourth quarter, the Spartans added two more touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, to extend their lead to 42-7.
