STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's volleyball team saw their six-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night, as they fell to Buena Vista, 3-0. Sophomore
Haley Bergan led the defensive effort with 16 digs to lead both teams.
In a showdown of two teams in the top half of the Iowa Conference standings, the Beavers jumped out to a fast start to take an early 5-1 lead. While Loras fought back multiple times, they were unable to sustain the momentum, repeatedly losing it to the aggressive Buena Vista side. After a kill by junior
Danni Kennedy to tie the game at 24, the Beavers rattled off back-to-back kills to take the first set victory, 26-24.
Loras responded positively in set two, opening a 6-3 lead after back-to-back kills from Kennedy. The lead held until 16-10 when the Beavers went on a 12-6 run to tie the game at 22. Once again, Buena Vista stepped up when the game was on the line, putting set two to rest with a kill from Laura Barry and an attacking error from Kennedy.
The Duhawks refused to cave in set three, matching the Beavers point-for-point up to 11-all. Buena Vista turned up the heat and went on a 7-2 run to open an 18-13 lead. From there, it was too little too late for Loras, who struggled to mount an extended comeback, eventually falling 25-19.
