CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team advanced to Iowa Conference Tournament Championship, after drawing 1-1 with Coe on Wednesday night. The Duhawks converted on three of five from the penalty spot, securing a spot in Saturday's title game.
TURNING POINT
After Loras scored the first goal of the game in the 62nd minute, it appeared as though everything was wrapped up until Coe struck for the equalizer in the 74th.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a rematch of Loras' last loss on the year, the first half played out with little offense to showcase. Despite outshooting Coe 9-4 in the opening frame, the Duhawks struggled to put one past Coe's MJ Winterer. The Kohawk keeper made four saves to freshman
Michelle Loyo's one.
The first 10 minutes of the second half saw many back and forth chances, but the scoreless draw held on. In a span of 10 minutes, beginning in the 50th, the Duhawks peppered Winterer with four shots on target.
Finally, in the 62nd minute, Loras broke through and tallied the first goal of the game on a header from junior
Madie Avery. A service into the box by sophomore
Sydney Wright was headed first by senior
Katie Truesdale and bounced to Avery, who beat Winterer to the top corner.
After bringing their top-three attacking players back on in the 72nd minute, Coe was rewarded in the 74th with the equalizer on a goal from Ashlyn Moos. Sarah Fathallah dribbled past her mark down near the end line and sent a cross to the middle of the penalty area where Moos connected on the cross and directed it past a diving Loyo.
In extra time, Loras continue to push the issue on offense, but were repeatedly denied by Winterer and the Kohawk defense.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the sides turned to penalties to decide the match. Truesdale, Wright and senior
Kat Hermanas all converted from the penalty spot while Loyo made one save to deny Coe from advancing.
