ST. LOUIS (Duhawks.com) - Another goal was crossed off the list on Friday night for the Loras Men's Volleyball team, as the Duhawks completed a 3-0 sweep of Fontbonne to earn their first win in MCVL play. Freshman
Jimmy Combs continued his torrid pace, hitting .438 with eight kills.
Set one was fairly back and forth as neither team was able to extend their lead past two points. Leading 20-18, Loras (3-10, 1-4 MCVL) forced a timeout from the Griffins, which prompted two straight points to level at 20. From there, Loras regained their confidence and finished out the set as Combs sealed the win with a kill on an assist from freshman
Danny Krasich.
With the first set out of the way, the Duhawks opened set two in very similar fashion to set one, trading points back and forth with the hosts. Loras tried to pull away midway through the set, but a strong answer from Fontbonne kept the game within reach.
Just like in the first set, the two sides found themselves tied at 20. A kill by Combs was followed up by an ace to establish the two-point lead and force a timeout from the Griffins. The break in action did just enough to kill Loras' momentum, as the next serve from Combs resulted in an error.
After an ace from Krasich to bring Loras to set point, Fontbonne answered with back-to-back kills. Combined with an attacking error, the Griffins came to level ground at 24.
A kill by freshman
TJ Esporas put Loras back in the lead and an attacking error from Fontbonne gave Loras the 2-0 lead in the match.
Smelling victory, the Duhawks opened set three on a 13-7 run before the Griffins benefited from five Loras attacking errors. Refusing to cave, Loras righted the ship and pushed the tempo once again to establish a three-point lead at 19-16.
Leading 20-19, the Duhawks turned on the after burners and completed the sweep with a 5-0 run.
Game ChangerWhen Loras surrendered a three-point lead in late in set two, the Duhawks showed great resiliency by answering the run with two straight points to take the win
