AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Duhawks.com) - Based on how Saturday's game started for Loras, one would have thought it would have been a tough stretch for the purple and gold. An offensive eruption in the sixth inning catapulted the Duhawks to a 7-5 win over Beloit College.
An All-Region selection in 2014, Ryan Kaveney earned the start for Beloit, striking out six of the first seven batters he faced, putting the Duhawks behind the eight-ball from the very start.
Fortunately for Loras, senior
Adam Schwoebel was on top of his game, taking care of the Beloit hitters with little opposition.
The Bucs cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third on three straight hits. After a walk, two more singles from the Bucs ran their lead to three before Schwoebel could get the Duhawks back to the dugout.
Meanwhile, Kaveney continued to deal on the mound, holding the Duhawks to two hits through the first five innings. His luck ran out in the sixth, beginning with senior
Spence Bonner squaring up the offering from Kaveney and sending it through the left side for a single.
Senior
Adam Kennedy drilled the fastball from Kaveney off the mound and up the middle, bringing sophomore
Tony Heiser to the plate.
After a walk to Heiser, sophomore
Luke Leibforth dropped in his first of three hits of the day in shallow right field, to put the Duhawks on the board.
With the bases loaded, junior
Lucas Jacque took the inside fastball and scorched it to the wall in left field, clearing the bases and giving Loras their first lead of the night.
After Kaveney was lifted in the sixth, the Duhawks continued to push the pace, scoring three more runs before the inning was complete.
With a renewed sense of confidence, Schwoebel returned to the mound and retired one batter before being lifted for senior
Kody Massner.
Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Beloit scratched away two runs to cut Loras' lead to two.
The Duhawks' offense stalled in the eighth and the ninth, while the defense kept the Bucs in check.
Heading to the bottom of the ninth, Loras turned the duties over to junior
Nick Petruzzi to close out the ball game.
After recording two outs in the ninth, Petruzzi was lifted for senior
Connor Schreck, who came in and closed the door on the Bucs and handed Loras their third win in their first four games in the 2015 season.
Loras returns to the diamond on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on Waynesburg at Lake Bonny Park in Lakeland, Florida.
