DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras College Softball team opens a three-game roadtrip on Tuesday when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Coming off a 2-2 showing last week, highlighted by a 4-3 win over No. 13 Central, the Duhawks knock off the Eagles for the first time this season.
DUHAWKS STUN NO. 13 CENTRAL WITH LATE INNING HEROICS
Freshman Miranda Chapman's dinger leveled the score at three in the sixth inning of game one against the nationally-ranked Dutch. With senior Holly Klein dealing on the mound, the Duhawks drew even through six and a half before junior Makaila Haase ended the conest in walk-off fashion. Trailiing in the count with Klein on second, Haase laced a single up the middle to bring in the winning run. Loras' 4-3 walk-off win marked their first win against Central at Faber-Clark Field since 2005.
SOFTBALL SPLITS IN STORM LAKE
Game one slipped away from the Duhawks against the Buena Vista Beavers, 5-4. Loras bounced back quickly, taking care of the Beavers 6-3 in game two to secure the split. Backed by lights out pitching by senior Holly Klein in the latter innings, a home run by sophomore Danielle Stromert helped the Duhawks to the win.
WALKS AND DINGERS FILL STROMERT'S WEEK FIVE STATS
A consistent force atop the lineup for the Duhawks, sophomore Danielle Stromert garnered special mention from the Iowa Conference. Blasting two home runs and tallying a double, Stromert paced the Duhawks to a 2-2 mark on the week. Exemplifying a standout leadoff hitter, Stromert made her way on base by ways of three hits and six walks.
SHINGLER EXCELS IN OPPORTUNITY IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Tara Shingler made her first appearance of her career at Faber-Clark Field, coming in in relief of junior Makaila Haase. In three innings of work, Shingler pitched herself out of jams, and rallied behind her defense.
CELEBRATING THE DUHAWK SOFTBALL LEGACY
Loras welcomed softball alumni back to Faber-Clark Field as the team hosted an inaugural alumni day on Satruday. Softball staples from the class of '89 to '13 were recognized for their dedication and support over the years.
KLEIN TURNS IN STRONG WEEK ON THE MOUND
Senior Holly Klein made an appearance in each of the Duhawks' four games last week. After earning the loss in a hearbreaking game ones loss, Klein returned to the mound in relief in game two. Pitching 1.2 innings, Klein shutdown the Beavers with two clutch strikeouts late to seal the 6-3 win for the Duhawks. After a quick turnaround, Klein returned to the circle on Saturday against Central. With every pitch seeming to be on point, Klein lifted the Duhawks to their first win over the Dutch since the 2012 season.
THREE-GAME ROAD TRIP KICKS OFF IN MADISON
After hosting No. 13 Central in Iowa Conference play, the Duhawks will hit the road in week six. Loras opens a three-game road trip in Madison, Wisconsin with a bout against Edgewood before traveling to Simpson and UW-Platteville.
THIRD TIMES A CHARM
When the Duhawks take on the Edgewood Eagles on Tuesday, they'll look to knock off Edgewood for the first time this season. Dropping a pair of games to the Eagles at the Tuscon Invitational Games last month, Loras has the opportunity to level the season serioes at 2-2.
RIVALS COME TOGETHER TO STRIKEOUT CANCER
Loras and University of Dubuque joined forces last week, taking part in their fourth annual Strikeout Cancer game. Working together to raise awareness, the crosstown rivals raised over $1,600 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
