DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras Women's Volleyball team opened the IIAC-NACC Crossover Challenge in convincing fashion on Friday night, sweeping MSOE and Marian. Junior
Therese Schultz posted a career-best 14 kills in Loras' win over MSOE, operating at a .650 attack percentage.
In their first match of the day, the Duhawks jumped out to an impeccable start, converting on 17-of-32 attacks with four errors for a .406 team attack percentage. Schultz converted six of her eight attacks to lead the scoring rampage. From the middle, MSOE struggled to contain Schultz and her impeccable ability to put away attacks, resulting in a first set win for Loras, 25-19.
Her hot streak carried over into set two, where she again converted at a high rate, finishing off four of her five attacks. Joining Schultz in the offensive onslaught was junior
Danni Kennedy, who totaled three kills on five attacks. Defensively, the Duhawks were all over the court, with seven of the nine players recording a dig, which limited MSOE's attack front in the 25-14 win for Loras.
Leading 2-0, the Duhawks finished off the sweep with a 25-19 win in set three thanks to a balanced offensive attack. Four different players recorded three or more kills, including Schultz with four.
Even with the two-hour layover between matches, Loras didn't miss a beat, opening in set one against Marian with 14 kills on 31 attacks. The Sabres' offense stalled out with 11 kills and nine errors to their 33 attacks. The 14 kills Loras recorded were shared amongst six players, with Schultz finishing with four en route to a 25-18 set one victory.
Freshman
Claire Ritchie grabbed the spotlight in set two, exploding for six kills on eight attacks in set two and added two block assists to the tune of 25-12 victory for the Duhawks. Junior
Jenna Erickson was the key cog in the offensive wheel, totaling 10 assists in set two.
With the game nearly in hand, Loras' offense finally cooled off in set three, finishing with their lowest attack percentage of the day at .171. Marian's defense stepped up to post three total blocks, but it wasn't enough to stave off defeat, falling 25-18.
