DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Loras College Men's Soccer team got back to their winning ways on Saturday, with a 3-0 triumph over Simpson College. Junior
Ike Bruns led the way offensively for the Duhawks, assisting on two goals in the second half of play. His stellar performance put the Storm away for good.
Loras (5-2-1, 1-0-0 IIAC) put early pressure on the Storm (4-5-1, 0-1-0 IIAC) in the first half, registering two shots and three corner kicks within the first 20 minutes of the match. Senior
Justin Giacotto was the first to take advantage of that pressure, as he wasted no time heading one into the back of the net off of an assist by fellow seniors
Kevin Higgins and
Richard Lenke.
Coming out of the break up with a one goal lead, the Duhawks knew they'd need to continue the push for a second tally to secure the victory. Loras did just that in the 59th and 63nd minutes of play. Bruns used two perfect crosses to find the noggins of seniors
Bryan Irwin and
Mike Gordon. Irwin headed the ball across the goalkeeper's body leaving him with no chance of recovery. Gordon came running in from the right side of the box in order to find the ball and put it in the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Possession was a huge factor for the Duhawks who controlled both the style and tempo of play throughout the evening. Their ability to control the ball in the opponents' half of the field allowed for an easy day on Peterson's part, seeing just one corner kick and six total shots.
