DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras Women's Soccer team began their portion of the 2015 Iowa Conference schedule with a 3-nil victory over conference counterpart Simpson on Saturday. Senior
Danielle Vujovic netted the game-winner in the first half while fellow classmate senior
Katie Truesdale added two insurance tallies in the second half to secure the victory.
Loras (5-2-1, 1-0-0 IIAC) opened the scoring in the 24th minute thanks to a service into the penalty area from sophomore
Sydney Wright. Truesdale tracked the ball into the six and flicked it past the defender to Vujovic who was there to head home the winner.
The tandem of Vujovic and Truesdale continued to generate great scoring chances throughout the rest of the rest of the first half, but the score remained 1-0. Loras' defense held Simpson (2-6-1, 0-1-0 IIAC) to zero shots for the first 45.
The second half saw a repeat of the first half, as the Duhawks secured a majority of the possession. In the 62nd minute, a
Gretchen Schutz corner kick found
Katie Truesdale as she netted home her eighth goal of the season. Later on in the half, Truesdale again found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the year, picking up a loose ball off a goal kick by the Storm. With a step into the penalty area, Truesdale tucked her strike just under the crossbar and out of the reach of the Simpson keeper.
Loras' defensive pressure once again hampered Simpson's ability to generate offense, leaving the Storm to just one shot in the second half, giving them a total of one shot for the game.
Junior goalkeeper Maria Sebels netted the shutout, which is the Duhawks' first one the 2015 season.
