DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - A late push from the Loras wrestling team came up short on Thursday night, as the Duhawks fell to 11th-ranked Cornell, 23-16. Sophomore
Jimmy Davis won by major decision at 157# to lead the Duhawks.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS - Thursday's dual began with a forfeit by Cornell at 125#.
- Next up at 133#, sophomore Michael Triplett made his return to the mat.
- Triplett was the first to score, but Cornell's Phillip Opelt responded by scoring the next nine points, ending with a pin at the 4:26 mark.
- At 141#, junior Evan Weaver scored the first takedown against Cornell's Josh Martin, but an escape and eventual takedown from Martin turned the tides.
- Before the first period concluded, Weaver scored an escape to enter the second period tied 4-all.
- A quiet second period saw only one escape from Weaver, which gave him the lead heading to the third stanza.
- With two takedowns late in the period, Martin looked as though he had matters all wrapped up, but a late takedown by Weaver as time was expiring sent the match to overtime.
- Weaver kept the machine running and won in sudden victory with a takedown shortly into the overtime period.
- At 149#, Cornell's Trevor Engle took a 2-0 lead into the second period and added five points with a takedown, escape and two-point near fall.
- An escape by Griffin to start the third got the senior on the board, but another takedown from Engle sealed the major decision, 9-1.
- Sophomore Jimmy Davis got out to a quick start against Cornell's Aaron Engle, scoring a takedown and a four-point near fall.
- Engle managed to score an escape before the end of the period.
- A reversal and a takedown by Davis extended his lead to 10-2, before a third period takedown sealed the major decision, 13-3.
- At 165#, Cornell's Ben Hewson used a six-point second period to race out to a 8-0 lead over freshman Sam Schuler, eventually winning by major decision, 9-1.
- Freshman Chris Malone scored a reversal and a two-point near fall in the second period at 174#, but condeded a reversal to Cornell's Brian Cristion, sending the bout to the third period tied at 4-all.
- Malone was called for locked hands in the third before Cristion earned a point for an escape.
- A late takedown by Malone sent the match to overtime where Cristion prevailed to win 7-6.
- Five takedowns proved to be too much for Loras' Javier Soto to come back from as Cornell's Joseph Keller won 12-7.
- At 197#, senior Malcolm Watson executed his gameplan to near-perfection, scoring three takedowns and a two-point near fall to win 10-3 over Cornell's Ben Bergan.
- In the final bout of the evening, freshman Dillon Wagner fought to the final whistle, but suffered a 5-2 loss.
- The loss drops Loras to 1-11 on the year while Cornell improves to 10-6.
- Watson improved to 14-5 on the year and won his fourt consecutive bout.
- Weaver won his fifth consecutive match and improved to 12-7 on the year.

Loras will compete next at their home tournament on Saturday from inside the Graber Sports Center. Next week, the Duhawks will host the University of Dubuque in Iowa Conference action.
