Women's Volleyball Splits at St. Kate's Quadrangular

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's volleyball team split on Saturday at the St. Kate's Quadrangular, defeating Macalester 3-1 before falling to the hosts, 3-1. Freshman Kelly Boge led the offensive attack for the Duhawks on the day, registering 24 kills, including 14 against the Scots.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Loras vs. Macalester

Set One
  • Macalester opened a 5-2 lead out of the gates and maintained its lead until a kill from sophomore Claire Ritchie leveled the set at 11-all.
  • Ritchie's kill kickstarted a 12-3 run by the Duhawks. A late 5-0 rally from the Scots brought matters to 23-18, but back-to-back kills from sophomore Reilly Kuhn and Boge lifted the Duhawks to the 25-18 win.

Set Two
  • Neither side jumped out to a commanding lead in the second frame, trading points out to 13-all.
  • The parity continued to 23-all before a kill from senior Danni Kennedy pushed Loras to set point.
  • A ball handling error by Macalester's Brooke Hunter gave the Duhawks the 25-23 win.

Set Three
  • With their backs to the wall, the Scots came back in the third set and opened a 13-8 lead.
  • Attacking errors from Loras plagued the comeback bid, falling behind 17-10.
  • The Duhawks fought their way back into contention with a four-point run, thanks to a pair of attacking errors and a ball handling error by Macalester.
  • With a 19-16 lead, the Scots rattled off the final six points of the set to win 25-16.

Set Four
  • Loras opened the fourth set on a 5-1 run from the serve of sophomore Jenna Mazur.
  • Midway through the frame, Macalester worked its way back to a two-point deficit at 15-13.
  • Kills from Ritchie and Boge pushed Loras' lead to 19-17, only to be erased by a three-point run from the Scots.
  • Tied at 22-all, Ritchie and Kennedy powered away a pair of kills, coupled with a Macalester attack error to win the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.

Loras vs. St. Kate's
Set One
  • The Duhawks used the momentum from their first win of the day and opened a commanding 17-11 lead against the Wildcats.
  • An attack error from Boge cut the advantage to two at 20-18 before a 5-2 run capped the opening frame following a kill from Kennedy.

Set Two
  • St. Kate's turned the tides in the second set, establishing leads of 14-7 and 17-10.
  • A 12-5 run from Loras brought the Duhawks within striking distance thanks to a five-point serving run from Kuhn.
  • At 23-22, St. Kate's powered a kill and a service ace to level the match at 1-all.

Set Three
  • A back-and-forth opening to the third set resulted in a square score of 10-all.
  • Loras struggled to gain momentum, playing from behind a majority of the set.
  • St. Kate's maintained the upper-hand through the late stages, maintaining a multiple point lead, capping the win at 25-21.

Set Four
  • A three-point run from Loras to open the fourth set looked to be a preview of good things to come, but just as the Duhawks scored three quick points, so did the Wildcats.
  • Following an attacking error from Kennedy, St. Kate's found itself ahead 15-10, which it extended to 18-10 on the next three points.
  • Loras battled back thanks to a 10-2 run, but ran out of gas, conceding three of the next six points, falling 25-23.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Kelly Boge | Against Macalester, Boge turned in a seaons-best 14 kills, hitting .375 in the process while adding one dig.
Danni Kennedy | The senior middle matched a season-high 15 kills in Loras' match against St. Kate's, hitting .387 while adding five digs and two solo blocks.

UP NEXT
Loras heads to Whitewater, Wis. next weekend for the annual Dig Panici Classic. On Friday, the Duhawks will face a pair of WIAC opponents in UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater. First serve against the Titans is scheduled for 5 p.m.
