Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Ends Season with Split at Eagle Classic

LISLE, Ill. (Duhawks.com) - The 2016 season came to an end for the Loras women's volleyball team on Saturday with a split at the Eagle Classic, as did the careers of Danni Kennedy, Jenna Erickson, Therese Schultz and Tara Blake. In the first match, the Duhawks were swept by Aurora (26-8) before ending the season on a high note with a 3-0 win over Benedictine (12-19). Schultz capped her career compiling 25 kills and six total blocks. Haley Bergan ended her junior year with 55 digs and is 26 away of becoming the all-time digs leader at Loras.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Loras vs. Aurora
Set One
  • Through the bulk of the set, neither team could maintain control, failing to take leads of more than two until the late stages.
  • At 20-20, a four-point Spartan run, backed by kills from McKenzie Peyton, gave Aurora a 24-20 lead.
  • The Duhawks scored off of an error, but Aurora quickly responded to close the set 25-21.

Set Two
  • A block and consecutive kills from Schultz gave the Duhawks a 10-7 lead. Schultz finished the match with 10 total kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
  • Loras' errors began to build and as a result, Aurora's Emliy rattled off nine consecutive serves to give the Spartans a 16-10 advantage.
  • Loras cut the deficit to three, but eventually fell, 25-21.

Set Three
  • The Duhawks kept matters close early on until the Spartans erupted offensively and opened a 15-6 lead.
  • While Bergan finished with an impressive 23 digs, the Duhawks' comeback efforts were in vain, dropping the third and final set, 25-13.

Loras vs. Benedictine
Set One
  • Seven of the first 10 points came off of kills as the Duhawks started their final match of the season on the right foot thanks to a 10-8 lead.
  • A quick two-point run from Benedictine leveled the frame at 10-all, but Loras went on a six-point run to take a late lead.
  • Tight defense played a factor for the Duhawks, holding Benedictine to a .079 hitting percentage in the set.
  • Schultz put away five of her seven attempts in the set, as the Duhawks came out on top, 25-19.

Set Two
  • The Eagles responded in a positive way to start the middle frame led by their defense, stopping the Duhawks on multiple occasions and in the process opened an early 6-3 lead
  • Sophomore Claire Ritchie found her stride and provided the catalyst for a six-point Duhawk run.
  • Benedictine used its timeouts early in the frame in an attempt to slow the Loras rally, but neither break in action could slow the shift in momentum.
  • Loras kept rolling until senior Danni Kennedy put away set point with her team in front 25-18.

Set Three
  • Holding a commanding lead in the match, the Duhawks benefited from their net play, forcing errors out of the Eagles. Loras finished with nine total blocks.
  • The hot hand of Schultz earned three kills and combined for a block with freshman Kelly Boge, opening a 21-17 lead for the Duhawks.
