DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team (7-3-0, 3-0-0 IIAC) ended Central's 10-game win streak on Saturday afternoon with a 2–0 victory inside the Rock Bowl. Junior
Maura Walsh ended Central's shutout streak at 282 minutes with her game-winner in the 52nd minute. The Duhawks added an insurance goal from the penalty spot by junior
Sydney Wright in the 68th minute after a handball in the box.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
- Loras put the pressure on early in the match and earned a corner in the third minute. Junior Gretchen Schutz connected with junior Riley O'Neill but her header went over the cross bar.
- Schutz won posession of the ball off a goal kick and then proceeded to beat two Dutch defenders, forcing Central goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi to make a diving save.
- Once again, Schutz nearly found the back of the net when Loras received a free kick from 35 yards out in the 20th minute. Schutz delivered the ball to the top-corner of the goal that Lunardi got a touch of to tip it over the crossbar.
- The Dutch nearly had the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute when Erin Manion fired a shot that an outstretched senior Maria Siebels saved and was cleared away by junior Mackenzie Anderson.
- Senior Lizzy McWhinney got involved in the Duhawk attack when she dropped a pass at the top of the box for freshman Emily Robinson whose shot was directed right at Lunardi.
Second Half
- Loras recorded the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute of play when sophomore Elizabeth Mills sent a low-cross to the edge of the six. Lunardi was the quick to break up the play but was unable to secure the loose ball, opening a scoring opportunity for Walsh in which she tucked her shot under the crossbar.
- With the lead, the Duhawks maintained high pressure and it turned into a hand ball committed by Central inside the penalty area. Wright strolled in and beat Sydney Lunardi to give Loras the 2-0 lead.
- The Dutch earned a free kick in the 70th minute in which Mickaela Erickson sent her shot on goal, but Siebels was there to deny the scoring chance.
- Minutes later, off a Loras throw-in, Mills corralled the loose ball and beat a pair of defenders before striking a right-footed shot on goal that Lunardi saved.
- Loras' final push came in the 88th minute with Walsh delivering a ball over the top of the Central backline to an area where Robinson could make a run into the box. With a step on her mark, Robinson charged into the penalty area and blasted her shot directly at Lunardi who made the save.

Megan Brant I The defender repeatedly kept plays alive by creating turnovers in Central's attacking third. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native also was a main contributor in keeping the Dutch off the scoreboard Saturday afternoon.

The Duhawks travel to Waverly on Tuesday to face off against Wartburg in a rematch of last season's Iowa Conference Tournament Championship. The Knights (6-3-1, 2-1-0 IIAC), who were the preseason conference favorite, enter after suffering their first loss in conference play, a 2-1 overtime loss to Luther. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
