Women's Soccer Fights to Draw Against Knights

WAVERLY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - For the second consecutive meeting, the Loras women's soccer team and Wartburg battled to a scoreless draw on Tuesday night. Sophomore Elizabeth Mills recorded eight shots, with four on target. In goal, senior Maria Siebels posted 13 saves to earn the clean sheet.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
  • Loras opened with a majority of possession and dictated the pace in the opening 15.
  • Junior Gretchen Schutz narrowly missed on her chance in the first minute, forcing a save from Wartburg goalkeeper Beth Crow.
  • In the fifth minute, juniors Lauren Bolnius and Maura Walsh both had shots blocked, but Walsh's resulted in a corner.
  • With 15 minutes remaining, the Knights began to find their stride, testing Siebels in the 17th and 19th minutes.
  • On a Loras corner in the 37th minute, Schutz connected with junior Madie Avery inside the six, but Avery's header was denied by Crow.

Second Half
  • Head coach Matt Pucci adjusted his 11 for the second half and nearly had it pay off as freshman Savanna Fleeman nearly put the Duhawks with her shot in the 48th minute.
  • In the 63rd minute, Wartburg was whistled for a handball in the box, but on junior Sydney Wright's kick, Beth Crow made a diving save to preserve the clean sheet for the Knights.
  • Wartburg was inches from scoring in the 75th minute after Alyssa Drewelow was sent in on a through ball. A last-second tackle by senior Hanna Burgmeier got just enough of the ball to prevent a clean look.
  • The Knights came right back down in the 77th minute and pinged a shot off the crossbar, over the reach of Siebels.

Overtime I
  • Bolnius opened the first overtime with a blocked shot in the 94th minute, but the loose ball fell to the feet of Mills who blasted her shot on goal, pinging off the crossbar.
  • Wartburg's Nicole Adair found a seam in the middle and tested Siebels from distance, forcing the goalkeeper to dive to her right, parrying the shot out of play for a corner.
  • Off the corner, Alyssa Hewitt tested Siebels once again, only to have her shot saved.
  • With time winding down in the first overtime, Loras delivered the ball out wide to freshman Emily Robinson who pushed the ball forward and challenging Crow to make a save.
